Zerto Officially Launches, Backed by Battery Ventures and Greylock Partners,

2011-06-24
San Francisco-based company intends to bring disastery recovery to the so-called cloud
SAN FRANCISCO, June 24, Zerto today announced the official launch of the company and provided the first details of its replication technology. Zerto makes the process of protecting and replicating mission-critical applications easy and cost-effective. Purpose-built for virtualized and cloud environments, Zerto addresses the shortcomings of existing business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) solutions by closing a critical gap in migration strategies and providing a solution for those seeking to move data and applications to the cloud. Zerto is currently in beta with several organizations, including five Fortune 500 companies and three leading cloud providers. The company will soon launch the first hypervisor-based, virtual-aware, replication solution specifically designed for enterprise-class, tier-one applications.

"Traditional replication and BC/DR solutions were built for the physical world, not for virtualized environments," wrote ESG analysts Mark Bowker and David Chapa in their April 2011 research paper "Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery: Requirements for a Virtualized World." They continued: "When virtualization first became a viable technology, replication and virtualization were almost mutually exclusive - workloads important enough to need replication were not considered virtualization targets. Today, mission-critical applications are being virtualized - and must also be replicated. Replication occurring in the hypervisor instead of the storage array can eliminate the need for identical storage at the replication site."

Zerto replaces traditional array-based replication and BC/DR solutions. Zerto Virtual Replication is 100 percent virtual machine (VM)-aware and storage array independent. The company is delivering the mobility and flexibility needed for virtualized infrastructure without compromising the scalability and performance required for protecting mission-critical applications. Zerto Virtual Replication provides an all-in-one application protection and recovery solution without the baggage of array-based LUN solutions. It combines consistent enterprise-class replication technology with streamlined, automated recovery processes.

"We believe in the promise and potential of the cloud," said Ziv Kedem, founder and CEO, Zerto. "Zerto is solving a major problem that is stopping Fortune 500 enterprises from moving mission-critical production applications to the cloud. By moving replication to the hypervisor level, we eliminate the need for identical storage, while ensuring the immediate recovery of production applications."

Replication is not new territory for Zerto founders Ziv Kedem and Oded Kedem. The storage entrepreneurs were previously behind Kashya, the industry leading physical storage-based replication solution. Kashya was acquired by EMC in 2006 and is now EMC RecoverPoint.
