Thundra Closes $4M Series A

2020-01-22
BOSTON, MA, Thundra announced $4 million in Series A funding led by Battery Ventures.
Thundra™, the company helping application teams run fast safely, today announced $4 million in Series A funding led by global investment firm Battery Ventures, with participation from venture fund York IE as well as Berkay Mollamustafaoglu, the founder of Opsgenie and ScaleX Ventures. Battery General Partner Neeraj Agrawal joined the Thundra board of directors. The funds will be used to accelerate product innovation as well as to scale the company's marketing and sales teams in North America and Europe who work closely with customers navigating the shift to modern, cloud-native applications.

Thundra also announced the appointment of Ken Cheney as CEO. Cheney's distinguished career includes growing several enterprise startups as well as helping established corporations define and own market categories. He has held executive positions at companies including Mercury Interactive, Hewlett-Packard, Likewise Software (acquired by EMC), Message Bus, Chef Software and Qumulo. Cheney has a proven track record in the application management space. His appointment comes as Thundra debuts exciting new capabilities. Today, the company announced the industry's first comprehensive Application Observability and Security Platform™, as co-founder Serkan Ozal resumes the role of CTO.

Thundra, a spinout of Opsgenie which was acquired by Atlassian earlier this year, successfully manages large-scale microservice applications across development, testing, staging and production environments. The Thundra Application Observability and Security Platform™ provides the first true end-to-end visibility, anomaly detection, debugging, troubleshooting, alerting and automated actions for serverless-centric, container and virtual machine workloads. Thundra is the only provider that can offer application management, security and compliance together in a manner that pinpoints down to the line of code if there is an issue.

"Thundra started as a project within one of our portfolio companies, Opsgenie, where it immediately demonstrated enormous value," said Neeraj Agrawal. "There is a massive opportunity for Thundra as a stand-alone company, and it is time to aggressively scale. We believe Thundra's combination of talent and technology will drive application management forward quite rapidly by bringing to market highly innovative product features, such as the Thundra Application Observability and Security Platform."

"Enterprises must innovate quickly or die," said Izzy Azeri, a seasoned entrepreneur who serves as an independent director on the Thundra board. "Those who are first to adopt cloud-native, serverless-centric applications gain a powerful capability to out-innovate competitors. Thundra dramatically reduces the friction enterprises face when moving to cloud-native applications composed of microservices, consolidating capabilities typically provided by numerous complex tools while also doing the hard part, delivering greater value than all of those tools combined."

Thundra Improves Developer Productivity and Accelerates Application Team Velocity

Using Thundra to manage modern cloud-native microservice applications, enterprises are able to significantly reduce time spent managing traditionally complex microservice applications, such as those leveraging serverless functions, containers or virtual machines. As a result, teams are able to develop and manage applications exponentially faster without sacrificing security or compliance.

"Our customers consistently state that they face competitive pressures. Using Thundra, application teams can rapidly improve productivity," said Cheney. "Thundra replaces the need for multiple tools. With this latest iteration of the Thundra platform, application teams gain the security and compliance guard rails to run fast safely along with anomaly detection of issues spanning performance, availability, cost, security and compliance, as well as the ability to rapidly troubleshoot and resolve issues end-to-end, improving mean time to repair (MTTR) dramatically."

With its latest offering, Thundra has added capabilities such as:

Thundra Direct™: Software developers can now initiate remote debugging sessions from an IDE using Thundra Direct™ to pass debugging streams from cloud-native runtime environments to their local IDE for faster troubleshooting and debugging, accelerating code iterations.
Thundra Everywhere™: This feature provides support for container and virtual machine workloads, along with existing support for serverless-centric workloads to provide application teams a standard platform for all cloud-native applications.
Thundra Rapidstart™: In under five minutes from start to value, Thundra users can onboard an application using Cloudwatch Logs. Users can then access application topology maps without the need for time consuming stitching for immediate application insights.
Thundra Protect™: Application teams safely accelerate software delivery by incorporating security from Thundra into their CI/CD workflows and runtime environments. Software developers are relieved of the time-consuming task of repeatedly ensuring compliance controls are in place and providing ongoing proof to auditors.
Thundra Detect™: Vulnerabilities and other issues are often introduced by architectures composed of independent functions and other services open to external interactions. Using data science and machine learning, application behavior patterns identified as anomalies can be automatically blacklisted or other automated actions taken. Teams can be notified with real-time alerts as well as integrations with third-party tools such as OpsGenie, PagerDuty, VictorOps, Slack or ServiceNow.
Thundra Best Practices: Thundra has codified a range of best practices proven to improve application health by over 50%. These productized best practices help enterprises accelerate the adoption of modern microservice applications.
"Ensuring application health is increasingly complex, with enterprises struggling to understand application behavior as they adopt new architectures and technologies, including microservices and serverless services," said Nancy Gohring, senior analyst at 451 Research LLC. "Organizations are looking for tools that can be shared across teams and that deliver unified insight into applications composed of microservices."
