Tactus Technology Grabs $6M Series A

2011-12-21
FREMONT, CA, Developer of next-generation touch interface components, today announced that it has secured $6 million in Series A funding led by Thomvest Ventures.
Tactus Technology, developer of next-generation touch interface components, today announced that it has secured $6 million in Series A funding. Thomvest Ventures, a $150 million evergreen fund capitalized by Peter J. Thomson, led the investment. The funding will allow Tactus to expand its product development and ramp up operations toward large-scale customer deployments.

In a world of flat, touch devices, Tactus provides a new dimension to touchscreens by enabling real, physical buttons to rise up from a screen's surface on demand, and then recede back into the screen, leaving a perfectly flat, transparent surface when gone.

"Tactus has a unique technology that will bring real touch to touchscreens," said Jonathan Barker of Thomvest Ventures. "People experience the world through touch and given a choice, we are confident that people will prefer a truly tactile experience."

While touchscreens provide a versatile user experience, they provide no tactile experience for consumers. Current attempts to solve this deficiency have relied on haptics, which provides simulated button feedback (such as a buzz) after you touch the screen. Tactus, on the other hand, is creating real, physical buttons using a dynamic surface.

"Imagine if buttons grew out of your smartphone, tablet or dashboard to improve the user experience. You could rest your fingers on them, type or play games, and then have the buttons disappear when you are done," explained Craig Ciesla, CEO of Tactus. "Tactus is providing the next generation of touch interaction and we are very excited to have Thomvest as strong investor and partner."
