Sand 9, a MEMS company developing tiny timing products for wireless devices, has raised $16 million in equity out of a planned $20 million fund raise, according to SEC filings. Eleven investors participated in the offering.

Sand 9 is the technology leader in advanced MEMS resonators. Using the firm's universal resonator process flow, Sand 9 is introducing a suite of products for communications timing applications. Silicon MEMS technology has many advantages over traditional quartz crystal. Applications for the firm's lead product, the TCMO™, include GPS, LTE, 3G, WiFi, networking, and industrial.
