Remind Raises $40M in Series C

2014-09-30
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Secure mobile communication product for teachers, students and parents, announced it has closed a $40 million Series C financing round.
Remind, the secure mobile communication product for teachers, students and parents, announced it has closed a $40 million Series C financing round led by previous investor Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) with additional participation from The Social+Capital Partnership and First Round Capital. The company's latest round of funding brings the total capital raised to $59 million.

Remind's mission is to empower teachers around the world to connect with students and parents. The company believes that more efficient communication between teachers, students and parents will foster relationships that will positively impact education.

During this year's back-to-school season, Remind saw 350,000 new users signing up per day and they now connect 1 million teachers with more than 17 million students and parents.

The team will use this latest financing round to expand Remind's product internationally, grow its product and engineering teams, scale its community and support teams to continue to foster relationships with teachers around the world.

'Mobile has changed our everyday lives and is now changing how we learn,' said John Doerr, founder and partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. 'Remind's simple, safe and free messaging app is connecting millions of K-12 teachers, students and parents. We're thrilled to invest in their hyper growth.'

'We were ecstatic about the opportunity to partner with John Doerr and lead an inside round at Remind. The company's vision, if fully realized, will create the first complete graph in education (more than 3 billion people worldwide) and offer the education system a product that drives meaningful outcomes,' said Chamath Palihapitiya, founder and managing partner, The Social+Capital Partnership.

According to research by the NPD Group in September 2014, the use of smartphones and tablets by children aged 4-14 in the United States outpaces usage of all other consumer electronic devices. As a result, mobile technologies are becoming more prevalent in the education system and teachers have recognized that in order to make learning more accessible, they have to meet their students where they are -- on their mobile phones.

'Remind originated from the idea of what the world could look like if we could make it easier for millions of teachers to personally connect with students and their families,' said Brett Kopf, CEO and cofounder, Remind. 'We exist because of teachers and this latest funding round will keep us working hard to ensure we are meeting the needs of educators across the world.'

Teacher Feedback
'I was one of Remind's first five users and I've seen the company go through all kinds of product iterations and growth,' said Michael Buist, fifth grade teacher at Knox Gifted Academy in Chandler, Arizona. 'I appreciate how they've stayed true to their roots. From the beginning, Brett and the Remind team have been committed to listening to teacher feedback as they build and grow their product.'
