Qloo Closes $3M Seed Funding
2013-11-14
NEW YORK, NY, Recommendation engine Qloo announced today that it has closed out its $3 million Seed funding round.
Recommendation engine Qloo announced today that it has closed out its $3 million Seed funding round with $1.6 million in funding from angel investors Samih Toukan and Hussam Khoury, founders of Maktoob, acquired by Yahoo, and Tommy Thompson, founding partner of Cross Creek Pictures, the producer of Oscar-winning film Black Swan and Rush. They join investors from Kindler Capital and celebrity investors Danny Masterson and Cedric the Entertainer in the Seed round.
Also today, Qloo emerged from private beta to release its first iOS application, which is now available for free download in the Apple App Store. Qloo enables consumers to discover new things based on their entire spectrum of tastes. Leveraging a proprietary and patent-pending cross-domain recommender engine, Qloo takes clues from a person's current interests to introduce them to new things across eight cultural categories: music, film, TV, dining, nightlife, fashion, books and travel. Qloo breaks the mold of single-track recommendation engines that only consider one aspect of a person's interests when making cultural recommendations. The company, founded in 2012 by Alex Elias and Jay Alger, plans to release an Android application by the end of the year, followed by a tablet version.
'It's with great pleasure that we announce the close of our Seed funding with highly strategic investors from the tech and entertainment industries,' said Alex Elias, CEO and co-founder of Qloo. 'Qloo's traction with our early cohort of contributors has been amazing, and we're committed to helping them enrich their everyday lives by discovering new cultural experiences and entertainment, all based on their personal taste.'
