NGINX Receives $8M

2016-04-21
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, NGINX, the engine that enables flawless application delivery for the modern web, today announced a new $8 million strategic investment led by leading telecommunications provider, Telstra.
NGINX, today announced rapid growth and expansion in the application delivery market, with the appointment of industry veteran Tom Hull to its Board of Directors, as well as a new $8 million strategic investment led by leading telecommunications provider, Telstra. The move will bring further expertise to the company and help it continue to expand and capture a significant share of the global application delivery market.

NGINX now powers more than half of the world's busiest sites and applications. In 2015, NGINX experienced remarkable growth, adding 275 new enterprise customers, and increasing its revenue by 300%. Enterprises are turning to NGINX Plus as the application delivery platform-of-choice based on its ability to continuously scale and innovate to meet user demand for high-performing applications. As more large enterprises adopt the cloud, containers, and microservices, NGINX continues to attract strong interest in its commercially-supported offerings, driving a growing market opportunity in the enterprise.

Tom Hull brings more than 25 years of leadership and sales experience to NGINX. Over the years, Hull has played a critical role in reinventing and growing the market opportunity for application delivery solutions. He helped build hardware application delivery controller (ADC) leader, F5 Networks, into a global market player before leaving to help reinvent the category at Union Bay Networks, which was later acquired in 2014. As a Board member, Hull will support NGINX's efforts to reinvent the category once again, and help advise them in their rapid ascent into the top leader spot in the software-based application delivery market.

'I'm excited to join the Board at NGINX, and believe that the company's unique approach to building application delivery software based on open source innovation will continue to slingshot them forward at a rapid pace,' said Tom Hull. 'NGINX is gaining real traction in the market, and is the only complete application delivery platform on the market today for modern web applications, enabling organizations of all sizes to harness the latest technologies, including microservices and containers, to bring their applications to market faster and more reliably.'

NGINX has also raised additional capital, adding $8 million to its Series B round in a strategic investment. This investment was led by Telstra Ventures, the ventures investment arm of leading Australian telecommunications company Telstra, with participation from existing investors -- NEA, e.ventures, Runa Capital, and Index Ventures. By partnering with Telstra, NGINX is expanding its application delivery solution into new geographies, leveraging Telstra's extensive customer footprint throughout Asia-Pacific and beyond.

'When you look under the hood of many of the most popular websites around the world today you find NGINX's technology. This business continues to grow their share of the application delivery market,' said Mark Sherman, Managing Director of Telstra Ventures. 'NGINX consistently delivers improved capabilities and performance for content heavy sites, and sites experiencing high traffic volumes. We are looking forward to working closely with NGINX to improve our customer experience and help our enterprise customers embrace more software-defined application services.'

'Adoption of NGINX is increasing rapidly, with today's most forward-thinking application builders and technology leaders relying on NGINX to keep their sites running flawlessly,' said Gus Robertson, CEO of NGINX, Inc. 'With Tom's proven track record and seasoned guidance, and Telstra's strategic support and sprawling customer base, we're aiming to take NGINX from the hundreds of customers we have today to the thousands and tens of thousands of enterprise buyers who will benefit most from our software.'
