Mojo Vision Emerges with $50M Funding
2018-11-14
SARATOGA, CA, Mojo Vision today announced it has raised over $50 million to date in venture and strategic funding.
Mojo Vision today announced it has raised over $50 million to date in venture and strategic funding to develop an augmented reality platform that will deliver the kind of immediate, powerful and relevant information people personally expect from technology, but without the frequent intrusion of today's mobile devices.
"Invisible Computing is about having faster and more natural access to information, but without phones, tablets or other devices getting in the way; in the world of Invisible Computing, we will be able to focus on the people around us without the interruptions from today's screens."
Mojo Vision, which had operated in stealth mode until today, said it has raised funding from leading venture firms including Shanda Group, Khosla Ventures, NEA, Fusion Fund, Liberty Global Ventures, 8VC, Dolby Family Ventures, AME Cloud Ventures, Open Field Capital, and others.
The company was co-founded by CEO Drew Perkins, CTO Mike Wiemer and Chief Science Officer Michael Deering, and is led by a team of Silicon Valley veterans from companies including Apple, Amazon, Google, HP, Infinera, Agilent and Marvell, among others. Mr. Perkins is credited with authoring the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and has previously co-founded four companies that were eventually acquired or made public offerings. Dr. Wiemer holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and co-founded a solar cell company that broke world records for solar cell efficiency. Dr. Deering holds a PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley, was a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems, has conducted ground-breaking computer graphics research over his career, and is a named inventor of 133 patents.
Mojo Vision is also developing the underlying technology required to deliver its pioneering augmented reality platform. The platform will enable information to be instantaneous, unobtrusive and available hands-free, and will allow people to interact with each other more freely and genuinely.
Mojo Vision calls this type of experience Invisible Computing.
The company did not offer any immediate specifics regarding product availability or planned form factors.
"People want technology to deliver information faster and in more convenient ways, but in many cases the scale has tipped in the other direction. The instant access to information we enjoy today can also distract us from important parts of our lives. The very technology that was designed to improve communication is now often a barrier to fundamental personal connections," said Drew Perkins, CEO at Mojo Vision. "Invisible Computing is about having faster and more natural access to information, but without phones, tablets or other devices getting in the way; in the world of Invisible Computing, we will be able to focus on the people around us without the interruptions from today's screens."
Mojo Vision recently conducted a survey of 1,000 consumers and found that they would welcome the benefits of Invisible Computing. Respondents were asked to imagine accessing information on demand without a phone, tablet or other device encumbering them. People identified many useful scenarios, with more than half (54 percent) saying their lives would benefit most by being able to move about more freely. Fifty percent said this type of access would also be safer and help avoid dangerous situations, while 48 percent saw the benefit of having information at hand to avoid awkward social situations like forgetting someone's name in a business meeting or at a party.
Similarly, the survey asked respondents about getting information on a mobile device that was visible only to themselves and invisible to anyone else. People were most interested in having this type of access during social situations to remember names or information (54 percent) and business meetings to have vital information on hand (40 percent).
As the company plans to bring these types of experiences to people for both everyday and mission-critical needs, Mojo Vision is developing its Invisible Computing platform around three essential elements:
Focus: The platform will enable people to have their eyes up and focus on the information and ideas that can improve their lives or business and not look down at a screen.
Freedom: People will have access to information and ideas wherever they go without a cumbersome device. Information will be delivered in an immediate, intuitive and unobtrusive way.
Confidence: This focus and freedom can give people a new set of abilities, restore lost confidence, or deliver a new level of self-assurance.
The company will release more detail on its technology, platform and products at a future date.
