InternMatch Lands $4M Series A

2013-06-11
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Leading platform for helping companies find and hire talented students, announced a new $4 million Series A round of funding led by Artis Ventures and Subtraction Capital.
InternMatch, a leading platform for helping companies find and hire talented students, just announced a new $4 million Series A round of funding led by Artis Ventures and Subtraction Capital. The round also includes new investments from previous investors 500 Startups, Kapor Capital, Rudy Gadre and others.

Along with the new funds, InternMatch is adding Paul Willard as a board member. Paul is currently the CMO of Atlassian and has expertise growing enterprise marketing operations and scaling online revenues, which he did as CMO of Coupons.com and Practice Fusion prior to Atlassian.

InternMatch has quickly grown to a dominant position in the college hiring market despite minimal funding up until this point. The platform is now seeing more than 650,000 unique students each month, a number that has doubled in the past four months, and more than 150,000 applications, a number that has quadrupled in this same time. The company plans to leverage this high volume of activity and the implicit data students reveal when performing internship searches to improve the hiring process for both sides of the market.

"One of the largest pain points for students is discovering what opportunities exist and where they have a legitimate chance of success," said Andrew Maguire, CEO of InternMatch. "We are building recommendation tools that help students discover new internships and jobs based on interest, as well as understand where students like them have succeeded in the past."

InternMatch is also tackling the issue from the other direction, building out a database of students, which will be searchable by employers who want to hire candidates proactively. "The prevalence of online job applications means it's easier than ever to send resumes, but harder for employers to filter through the noise," Maguire said. "We are launching new discovery tools that help employers find students similar to previous hires and deliver a unique, targeted message conveying their employment brand."

When employers do find students who are a good fit, they can direct them to their Campus Hub, which contains rich content about their team, culture and internship roles. Campus Hub partners include Facebook, Viacom, Yahoo!, Nestle, NetApp and many others.

InternMatch will use the funding to expand their team, continue to build the marketplace, and invest in developing data powered technology

In many ways, the college market is a perfect fit for a data driven-solution to making quality matches and recommendations. A recent InternMatch report revealed that the average student finds their first internship sophomore year and embarks on two to three internship searches before graduation. This means InternMatch is able to collect a wealth of data about how students move through the early parts of their career in just a few years, something that is much more difficult to do with older job seekers that change careers far less frequently.

"Preparing and transitioning students to gainful employment is one of the most important problems we as a nation can address to both fight unemployment and help our companies succeed with the right talent," said Mike Harden, a partner at Artis Ventures. "InternMatch is perfectly positioned to help address these issues."
