Gemr Raises $4.93M in Series A

2014-11-06
PORTSMOUTH, NH, Pioneering online social community for collectors, announced today that it has raised $4.93 million in a Series A funding round.
Gemr, a pioneering online social community for collectors, announced today that it has raised $4.93 million in a Series A funding round from a group of private and institutional investors that includes Gary R. Sullivan, Co-Founder, American Antiques expert and appraiser on PBS's Antiques Roadshow, James B. Hawkes, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Eaton Vance Corp., and The NH MillWorks Fund. The funding, raised in just 30 days, will be used to complete the development of its iOS and Android mobile applications, a web app, and to support a national marketing launch effort.

Gemr is an online collector community and mobile native application that allows users to easily find, collect, trade or sell an item simply by snapping a picture and sharing it with interested Gemr peers. Over 40 percent of Americans consider themselves collectors and each week 100 million Americans watch television programs like Antiques Roadshow or American Pickers. However, there is no equivalent experience on the Internet or as a mobile platform.

'Today, collectors manage their items by jumping from one web service to another,' said serial entrepreneur, Gemr Founder and CEO, Terry Anderton. 'They buy and sell on eBay, communicate and share via Facebook, identify their aspirations on Pinterest, but they can't do everything in one place. Gemr's solving that problem.'

The members of the Gemr community can use a suite of proprietary tools for greater connection and engagement around their treasured items, and to aggregate both item history and a real-time, crowd-scored valuation. Types of collections range from antiques, to comics, to sneakers, to music and beyond.

'Social media continues to evolve, and people are looking for deeper, more meaningful online connections,' said Anderton. 'Facebook and Twitter have succeeded in connecting virtually everyone on the planet, but they've become noisy platforms that don't always allow people with similar hobbies to connect on a deeper level. Gemr brings together passionate enthusiasts with common collecting interests without the interruptions of unwanted status updates and game requests.'
