2013-11-08
SANTA CLARA, CA, Espresso Logic today announced that it has secured $1.6 million in seed funding from Inventus Capital and other key Silicon Valley angel investors.
Espresso Logic today announced that it has secured $1.6 million in seed funding from Inventus Capital and other key Silicon Valley angel investors to launch the industry's first reactive logic programming-based database backend as a service. Espresso provides an instant RESTful server for developers to connect web and mobile applications to external databases including MySQL, Oracle Server and Microsoft SQL Server. Enterprise developers can now use the Espresso Designer to securely manage access to database rows and columns based on individual roles. Just register and you can start using it right away - no downloads or configuration.
Reactive or asynchronous programming is one of the hottest emerging trends of 2013, with companies like Netflix and Facebook voicing support for this new programming paradigm oriented towards data flows and change management. The concept was first applied to spreadsheets to simplify financial programming and it quickly spread to other use-cases and environments. Espresso Logic is the first to apply this technique to backend business logic, which dramatically reduces programming time, maintenance and documentation efforts.
'API management is gaining momentum, but until now creating APIs has been a complex process,' said R. Paul Singh, CEO of Espresso Logic. 'Espresso provides a system that enables developers to create APIs from existing databases along with business logic and declarative security at an unbelievably fast rate. Because our technology is based on standards such as REST, JSON and JavaScript, it's ideally suited for mobile developers looking to shorten the development time of their business applications.'
Inventus Capital led the funding along with angel investors including Raju Reddy (advisor Hitachi Systems), Lee Nackman (previously with IBM, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft), Gokul Rajaram (Square, Facebook, Google) and Anurag Jain (previously with Dell).
'We fund strong teams, as much as innovative ideas - and there's a reason this isn't the first time we've invested in this founding team,' said Kanwal Rekhi, Managing Partner at Inventus Capital Partners. 'This group of entrepreneurs has built systems that are already in use today by many huge companies and their newest breakthrough technology will create countless new opportunities for backend developers around the world.'
Beta Companies: Programming Time from Months to Days
Leading up to the launch, select companies have been testing Espresso Logic software in their environments and all reported significant acceleration in their development projects.
'Faced with the daunting task of developing a server solution for handling sensitive information, and having very little time to implement it, I was very happy to discover that Espresso could automate most of the work for me,' said Nico teWinkel of Project Nocturne, a social welfare mobile application for iOS environments. 'Getting started was simple too - the only thing I needed to do was sign up for an account and voila - an instant REST environment.'
'When we migrated the planning application onto the Espresso platform, we found that the combination of rules and JavaScript business logic events brought us unparalleled agility and flexibility,' said Joseph Hu, CEO of Rulemeister, which sells solutions to companies including Blue Shield, Union Bank and Los Angeles County. 'It is amazing how fast we are going!'
