Compass Quality Insights Launches with $2M

2013-06-11
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, New solution for software quality assurance and testing announced it has secured $2 million in funding from Bain Capital Ventures and XSeed Capital.
Compass Quality Insights, Inc. (Compass) today formally launched its company and the Compass Profiler, a new solution for software quality assurance and testing designed to close the gap in tools for the Quality Assurance sector. In addition, the company announced it has secured $2 million in funding from Bain Capital Ventures and XSeed Capital.

Today the average piece of software goes into customers' hands 85% faster than it did 10 years ago. This means that QA teams are expected to do more in less time, leaving them prone to greater risks, errors and security issues. Typically one-third of all time spent building software is dedicated to quality assurance (QA) testing, yet existing tools have not evolved to match the speed of innovation.

The company's first product, Compass Profiler, arms testers with analytics to prioritize testing effort by identifying exactly what has changed in a web application, how it might interact with other parts of the software, and the location of potential testing gaps that may allow bugs to slip through. Profiler's powerful new analytics are dedicated to the unique needs of QA teams, empowering testers and driving improved communication with developers, project managers, and CTOs.

"Testing is a rigorous discipline requiring a unique perspective," said Dan Steere, Compass' CEO. "Good decisions are crucial. We founded Compass to meet the enormous opportunity in helping testers make better-informed decisions, faster. Compass is focused on empowering the human side of all types of manual or automated testing - complex decision making."

Compass was founded in 2012 as Nerati, by Dan Steere, Jad Naous and Ramesh Chandra. Dan is a five-time entrepreneur; Jad and Ramesh were research collaborators at MIT CSAIL. The team of 10 is headquartered in San Francisco and is supplemented by Ben Nye of Bain Capital Ventures and Robert Siegel of XSeed Capital as board members. Compass Profiler is available in beta form today for QA teams testing Java web applications.

"All businesses run on application software which is constantly changing to meet customers' needs," said Ben Nye, Managing Director at Bain Capital Ventures. "Compass enables its customers to plan and execute new versions of their software faster with less resources and enhanced quality. Its real-time analytics enable testing functions to keep pace with agile development processes. Compass addresses an unmet need in a large $4 billion market ripe for disruption."

"We couldn't be more excited to be backing the Compass team," said Robert Siegel, General Partner at XSeed Capital. "As Dan, Jad, and Ramesh incubated the company with us, we saw the foundation of a group that will achieve great things."
