SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Mobile game company, today announced the company has secured $1.2M in seed funding.
Pixowl, a mobile game company, today announced the company has secured $1.2M in seed funding through notable start-up investor platform Angel List. Founded by mobile industry innovators, Pixowl concepts, develops and publishes mobile games that blend comic book art and character-driven storylines. The company's first hit game featuring their lead character, Doodle Grub, has been played by 8M players worldwide.
The current round of funding will be used for developing "The Grub" franchise, bringing the iconic orange creature to life via additional mobile games, toys, comic books and more. Pixowl develops IPs with an original storytelling approach, led by acclaimed French artist Laurel, author of seven comic books.
Investors in Pixowl include 500 Startups, Kima Ventures, Pymar Venture, Art.com founder Joshua Chodniewicz, and tech entrepreneurs Martin Varsavsky and Fabrice Grinda. Entertainment experts Eric Hautemont, CEO of board and card games publisher Day Of Wonder, and Sunil Gunderia, Former Disney Mobile GM, are members of the Pixowl advisory board.
"Pixowl's Grub is a fun, memorable game character that appeals to both kids and their parents," said Dave McClure, Founding Partner, 500 Startups. "Pixowl has a scalable business plan, an experienced team and sure-hit IPs."
Mobile gamers now represent the largest gamer segment.
In September 2012, NPD reported that, in the United States, mobile gamers now represent the largest gamer segment. In 12 months with its business headquarters in San Francisco and main development studio in Buenos Aires, Pixowl has already captured a portion of this market with its first three games, Safari Party, Doodle Grub and The Sandbox. Each has been a Top 25 iOS game and collectively, the three titles have more than 10M active players worldwide on iOS and Android platforms.
"We believe the large mobile gaming community wants rich, character-driven stories on their phones and tablets," said Arthur Madrid, CEO of Pixowl. "Just like Stan Lee's fans follow their favorite heroes reading new comic books every week, our mobile games aim to connect with players on a deeper level, moving from ''tapping" games to high-quality story telling experiences."
