Venture Capital News: Kindara Closes $5.3M Seed Round
2015-08-19
BOULDER, CO, Women's health company that produces apps and devices that help women understand and achieve better results with their reproductive health, has closed $5.3M.
Kindara, a transformative women's health company that produces apps and devices that help women understand and achieve better results with their reproductive health, today announced the close of $5.3M in Seed funding, including the conversion of $1.9M in convertible notes. The round was led by Boston Seed Capital with participation from SOSV, Good Works Ventures, PV Ventures, MENA Venture Investments and 62 Mile Ventures. The new funding will allow Kindara to extend their platform to address a broader range of women's health concerns. Additionally, the funding will be used to finalize the manufacturing of its first connected device, Wink, an advanced Bluetooth basal thermometer that connects wirelessly with the Kindara app to give women a seamless experience when aiming to achieve or avoid pregnancy naturally.
'Healthcare is changing rapidly right now,' said Will Sacks, CEO and Co-founder of Kindara. 'Women want to understand their bodies and use that knowledge to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. The Kindara platform gives them an unprecedented level of insight, support and empowerment when making decisions around achieving or avoiding pregnancy. This recent round of funding will allow us to extend our lead in this movement and expand beyond fertility to provide lifetime support for women's health and wellness.'
According to a report from Rock Health, VCs invested $4.1 billion in digital health startups in 2014. Deal size grew 40% since 2013 and total funding grew 124% in just over a year. The influx of capital and popularity in digital health platforms is due to the demand from consumers who are seeking a more personalized alternative to the 'one size fits all' institutional healthcare system. People want to play a more active role in their healthcare to guarantee the best possible outcome - not just to live, but to thrive. Kindara is committed to giving women mobile tools that empower them to be better, more informed stewards of their own health.
Kindara will designate a portion of the funding to facilitate the release of Wink, which will be shipping at the end of 2015. Wink is a convenient, beautiful and highly accurate Bluetooth thermometer, which records a woman's basal body temperature up to four times faster and syncs automatically with the Kindara app. Wink and Kindara are based on the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM), a highly effective and scientifically proven method of tracking fertility signs that helps women understand their fertility status each day. With this information, women can plan accordingly to either achieve or avoid pregnancy.
'Women's health is important on a global scale, and we're proud and excited to be leading this investment in Kindara,' said Dave Balter, Venture Partner at Boston Seed Capital. 'The future of healthcare is personalized, participatory and mobile, and we're proud to be helping Kindara radically evolve our knowledge of women's health and fertility'.
Since 2012, Kindara has helped more than 750,000 women better understand their bodies, 75,000 women achieve pregnancy, and enabled a collective total of 200,000 Pill-free, pregnancy-free cycles for those trying to avoid pregnancy. Women enter more than 650,000 data points into Kindara each week.
