Venture Capital News: Backplane Nabs $5M Seed Funding
2017-10-17
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Backplane, a startup that helps companies manage software deployments, raised $5 million in seed funding.
Backplane, the company on a mission to make networks incredibly powerful and easy to manage announced today the general availability of Backplane Core. The product launch coincides with the close of $5 million in seed financing. Baseline Ventures led the investment, with Harrison Metal also participating in the round. The company plans to use the funds to drive product development, and build world-class sales and marketing programs.
"No matter the tech stack, every company has to deal with the headache of provisioning, managing and scaling their network," said Michael Dearing, founder of Harrison Metal. "Backplane routes it, shapes it, and secures it so customers get the performance and agility they need to make their business model work. I invest in this stuff because no one company can be world class at this so they should let Backplane be their fixer."
Many organizations are increasingly looking toward public clouds in addition to their data centers to boost efficiency and reduce costs. The hybrid-IT solution presents challenges for network and infrastructure operations professionals, as traditional solutions were built to balance loads and direct traffic in the data center, and not the cloud, multi-cloud or hybrid models used today.
"We are constantly seeking the most innovative tools that increase velocity and reduce barriers to innovation. Backplane is revolutionary in terms of edge load balancing, we'd never seen any legacy provider offer such speed, security and simplicity," said Mickey Yawn, architecture manager at Turner Broadcasting System. "With Backplane, our team has the confidence to ship, secure and manage all of our most sensitive applications, both in the cloud and behind the firewall."
Backplane Core, generally available today is built to intelligently manage traffic across any configuration of environments. Backplane Core works seamlessly to ensure the availability and scalability of business-critical websites and applications. With Backplane, it is easy to understand how your systems, processes, and applications are working over the network. With features like label-based service discovery, and cloud agnostic routing and shaping, teams can have granular-control over their processes and applications, without the added overhead of manually managing configurations instance-by-instance.
"Backplane has a clear vision for the future of network orchestration, and is uniquely positioned to reshape what it means to connect people, devices and things to business-critical applications," said Steve Anderson, founder of Baseline Ventures. "The leadership team has proven experience solving enterprise-scale problems with ease; they have the vision and technology to transform the industry."
The company was founded by Blake Mizerany, a seasoned technologist and software engineer who has been solving routing and service discovery problems for the last decade, most recently at CoreOS. As the first engineer at Heroku, the platform-as-a-service for deploying and running applications, Mr. Mizerany played a crucial role in research, development and distributed systems engineering.
