Venture Capital News: SoloLearn Raises $1.2M
2016-10-19
PLEASANTON, CA, Global coding community, announced today that it has closed a seed round totaling $1.2M.
SoloLearn, a global coding community, announced today that it has closed a seed round totaling $1.2M. The round was led by Learn Capital, a Silicon Valley venture fund with a focus on edtech, and joined by number of private investors instrumental in backing the company in its founding stages.
The financing will accelerate the company's rapid growth by adding new forms of interactivity, advanced content, and further community features emphasizing the company's newly released SoloLearn profile. Since launching in 2014, SoloLearn has achieved over 10M downloads and in recent months has reached over 2.5M active learner profiles since launching this feature. Originally available just on Android and web, the service recently debuted on iOS.
SoloLearn was founded on the insight that millennials were leading a shift to a mobile-first lifestyle and even complex tasks like learning how to code were best accomplished by services built entirely for the smartphone. SoloLearn currently teaches Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, HTML, C#, Swift and other skills in one highly coherent environment available on all major platforms.
On the service, a range of experiences paired with peer-to-peer interaction work to gradually upgrade the learner's coding skills, building a trustworthy coder reputation one step at a time.
'Yeva and her team at SoloLearn have built a remarkably addictive service that delivers on the promise of highly engaged mobile learning,' said Rob Hutter, Managing Partner of Learn Capital. 'As the demographic and device shift moves to mobile-first in so many areas of our lives, it was urgent to develop a code learning service that leveraged mobile as a central design principle-not just in terms of where to build, but crucially where to learn. We were tremendously impressed by Yeva's leadership and execution on this compelling mission and look forward to an exciting path ahead.'
'We are particularly excited about Learn Capital joining this round, as the absolute alignment of vision and total understanding of what we do have been the building blocks of this deal. We've been fortunate to have had incredible advisers and angel investors since day one, and now we are adding capital partners that share our enthusiasm for self-directed learning that's centrally connected to community,' said Yeva Hyusyan, the co-founder and CEO of SoloLearn.
CEO Hyusyan commented further on the mission of the company:
'With coding transformed into a must-have skill, the challenge has been to create an enjoyable environment for infinite professional growth. A diversity of experiences and topics, often generated as a result of peer-to-peer interaction, gradually develop your competitive coder profile which is an in-demand asset in today's hiring market.'
