Kwarter, Inc. has raised $4 million in a Series A round led by T-Venture for its mission to create an end-to-end second screen solution for brands and broadcasters. Kinetic Ventures also participated in the round, which brings Kwarter's total funding to $5 million so far.
Founded in 2011 by Carlos Diaz and Sam Hickmann , Kwarter provides broadcasters, content producers and brands with a turn-key second screen solution to build and manage vibrant TV viewer communities.
With the second screen space getting more crowded every month, the problems facing the TV industry are no longer a secret. Viewers want a richer and more interactive live TV experience. Broadcasters are sharing viewer attention with multiple screens, and advertisers are seeking more engaging and effective ad models that take the second screen into account. What makes Kwarter stand out in the space is its approach as a professional solution-one that offers brands and broadcasters a full suite of features including TV check-ins, discussion, complementary content, rewards, social gaming, social TV analytics, ad serving, and more.
"We're interested in the problems facing television brands and broadcasters," says co-founder and CEO Carlos Diaz . "If there's one thing we've learned, it's that the future of TV advertising and broadcast lies in this multi-screen experience-but the question is what experience makes sense. That answer depends a lot on the TV content and TV brand you're talking about. Our platform is designed to be highly flexible, so that companies can create, publish, and manage interactive TV experiences that engage audiences for any type of programming."
After launching its FanCake prototype application in late 2011, Kwarter quickly began iterating, which led to an opportunity to collaborate with its first two partners, Turner Sports and AB InBev. The results were the release of the revolutionary TBS Social Dugout app and the popular Bud Light Sports Fan app, both in September 2012. From there, Kwarter set to the task of raising its Series A in order to prepare the company for high growth in 2013.
With this latest investment, Kwarter will aggressively scale both its team and platform as it moves beyond sports programming and adds more partners to its platform. FanCake and Bud Light Sports Fan are both available on iPhone and, as of this week, on Android.
