NEW YORK, NY, Open-source Android app developer CyanogenMod has received a $23 million Series B funding led by Andressen Horowitz.
CyanogenMod, an advanced-user Android firmware company that allows for open-sourced modification of phone apps, has received a Series B financing from new and existing investors.
The Series B round ($23 million, according to published reports) was led by Andressen Horowitz, according to information on the venture firm's blog; the CyranogenMod company blog also lists Tencent as a new investor and existing investors Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures as participants in the round.
CyanogenMod is a mobile firmware company developing open-source Android-based applications with the help of a global community of end users and hobby developers. The company offers customized, aftermarket firmware distribution for several Android devices, and bases its work on the Android Open Source Project. The mod, a 'barebone Android experience coupled with some very powerful tweaks', is designed for advanced Android users; many are 'largely untested', and are designed to 'push your phone much harder.' CyranogenMod allows independent developers around the world to develop applications that couple with the company's firmware.
